How to choose a home inventory app
The best home inventory app is the one you are still using next year. Here is what actually matters when you compare them — and what is just feature-list noise.
Every home inventory app promises the same outcome: know what you own. The difference between them is whether you are still updating the inventory a year later — an abandoned inventory is worth almost nothing, so judge every app on the friction of its everyday moments, not the length of its feature list.
The questions that separate them
How fast is adding one item?
This is the habit you will repeat hundreds of times. Count the seconds from "new thing in hand" to "catalogued with photo and value". Camera-first capture and AI that fills in details from a photo or receipt beat manual forms by an order of magnitude.
What happens to receipts and warranties?
An inventory without proof of purchase is half an inventory. Look for receipt scanning that creates items (not just a photo folder), warranty dates tracked per item with reminders — and ideally digital receipts delivered automatically from stores.
Can it produce an insurance-ready report?
The whole exercise exists for the day something goes wrong. The app must export a clean, complete report — items, photos, values, receipts — that you can hand to an insurer without an afternoon of formatting.
Does it run everywhere you live?
Capture happens on the phone; organizing happens on a bigger screen. An inventory locked to one device gets abandoned. Check for real apps on your platforms, synced — and web access for the day you are on someone else's machine.
Can you get your data out?
Your inventory should outlive any app. Look for full export (CSV or similar) — it is also your insurance against the developer disappearing.
What does the free tier really let you do?
A free tier should be big enough to inventory something real, so you can judge the everyday friction honestly before paying. Trial-by-screenshot tells you nothing.
